Lilly Daché

By the late 1940s, Lilly Daché reigned among American milliners. Her success allowed her to diversify her business and to make ever-more daring creations, like this hat. The body, made of an unusual pairing of black velvet ribbon interwoven with straw, fits the head like a coronet, while the dramatic peasant feather juts nearly two feet behind the wearer. In the 1940s Daché supplied hats for Hollywood films and, as this example attests, infused her collection with the kind of bold trimmings seen in on-screen costumes.
