Made in Paris in October 1882, the contrast of the two-toned velvet as well the textures of the plush gives this fairly simple bonnet a luxurious and interesting appearance, and is exemplary of the 1880s vogue for richly textured upholstery-like textiles. Amelia Beard Hollenback (1844-1918) was the wife of the prominent financier and philanthropist John Welles Hollenback (1835-1927). The Hollenback family made frequently trips to Europe and traveled extensively throughout the United States.
