The form of this impressive basin (lebrillo), with a flat bottom and flared sides, relates to traditions of Islamic pottery produced in Spain. The artist has adapted the familiar two-headed eagle of the European Hapsburg dynasty to a blue-and-white design scheme inspired by Chinese porcelain. The visible convergence of far-flung artistic traditions in this unusual object hightlights the global processes that contributed to a distinctive local Mexican ceramic style.
