The unique form of this whimsical hat, constructed by gathering up a large wired square of velvet over a rigid helmet-like foundation, shows the experimental and playful element being injected into millinery designs of the period. Although the specific form and construction is unusual, the vertical emphasis and somewhat stiff, vigorous projections are characteristic of styles around 1912-1915. This hat comes from the estate of Mrs. Arthur F. Schermerhorn, whose wardrobe is represented in the collection by numerous other creative and interesting items of French couture from the same period.
