Covered jar — Marie Zimmermann

One of the leading practitioners of the American Arts and Crafts movement, Zimmermann worked in a variety of media, including metal, wood, and precious gems. This exquisite vessel of silver, jade, and crystal, ornamented with gold and rubies, was purchased by the Museum in 1922 as an example of contemporary craft. The silver base is distinguished by visible hammer marks, a self-conscious conceit that references the hand of the artist.
