Given the perfect coordination typical of Mrs. Kempner's approach to dressing, it is a surprise to find that she was indifferent to handbags. And, while the number of shoes in her wardrobe is substantial, it is clear that shoes and bags played a lesser supporting and somewhat expendable role in Mrs. Kempner's arsenal of style. However, even among these more prosaic collections are a number of designs of notable originality and exceptional creativity.
