Given her sportswear approach to dressing, Mrs. Kempner acquired a number of short evening outfits, all in black, that could be disassembled and reconstituted into new ensembles. Whether by Saint Laurent, Oscar de la Renta, or Christian Lacroix, a design in Mrs. Kempner's closet was likely to be the object of predatory creativity.
