The cameo portrait in the base of this tumbler depicts the Marquis de Lafayette, whose visit to the United States in 1824 and 1825 provided the impetus for Bakewell’s production of commemorative sulphide glass. Developed in France, the technique of embedding a high-fired ceramic material into a bubble of glass, which was then deflated, was complicated and costly.
