Fur muffs and stoles first became fashionable in the late sixteenth century, the former deriving from fur cuffs and the latter from fur collars. In the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, muffs became a popular accessory among men and were carried even by army and naval officers. On November 30, 1662, Samuel Pepys noted in his diary: "[I] first did weare a muffe, being my wife's last year's muffe; and now that I have bought her a new one, this serves me very well . . . in this month . . . of great frost."
