While women adopted bifurcated garments for such specialized activities as cycling at the end of the nineteenth century and for beach and active leisure wear by the early twentieth, they were not fully embraced by women until well after World War II. In the 1950s, trousers, particularly jeans, became a symbol of youth, but it was the more formal trouser suit, introduced by André Courrèges in the early 1960s, that seems to have prefigured their greater acceptability today.
