In the United States, Griswold Lorillard's invention of the dinner jacket at Tuxedo Park was one of the first sartorial informalities to betoken the modern spirit. Edward VII, when Prince of Wales, favored the tuxedo and extended its popularity. By the era of the Charleston, the tuxedo had replaced the tailcoat as the prevailing dress for the younger set.
