The square-back sofa with a relief-carved crest tablet and downswept arms is a type distinctive to New York City in the first decade of the nineteenth century. These sofas are often attributed to the cabinet-making partnership of Slover and Taylor, located at 94 Broad Street from 1802 through 1804, due to the existence of a labeled square-backed chair with a similar crest tablet.
