The trapezoidal silhouette that Saint Laurent invented for his first collection at Dior was an immediate success, in part because its geometric formalism seemed to align fashion with contemporary art and design. The invention was to create a form that was not primarily determined by the waist and that seemed to have a life and raison d'etre beyond fashion's avowal of body.
