Evening dress
Madame Grès (Germaine Émilie Krebs)
ca. 1965 · silk · Costume Institute

Madame Grès, a designer popularly associated with a Neoclassical sensibility, has created a gown that appears to conform to the structure of the classical chiton. She was, however, inventive in her technique while conforming to an ancient aesthetic. Her gown is composed of two continuous panels of fabric, seamed only at center front, back, and sides. Lines of stitching at the shoulders and waistline hold in the finely gathered drape and a flesh-toned chiffon lining raises the waist to form the kolpos, or blouson.
