Evening coat — Madame Grès (Germaine Émilie Krebs)

The collar piece and sleeve are cut into the shoulder seam in gusset-like triangles. The intrusion of the collar piece releases ease over the bust line and sleeve's wedge-like apex releases a flare into the side of the coat. The coat gains a balanced amplitude and controlled buoyancy by this slash-and-open technique.
