Evening dress
Madame Grès (Germaine Émilie Krebs)
fall/winter 1953–54 · silk · Costume Institute

An evening dress is composed of three pieces in a deliberate composition in black and white. The bodice is black. The top insert of the skirt is black. The harem hem is white. Grès uses the piano-keys binaries with a concise and clear sense of composition about apparel. Where the black field meets the white is clear. Where black meets black, Grès articulates the suture with the pink sash. Her clothing is intellectually considered.
