Gilbert Adrian

From the late 1940s, Adrian worked with the textile artist, Pola Stout, a collaboration that continued until he closed his business in 1952. Stout produced woven striped and plaid fabrics for Adrian in specific patterns and colourations. The designer often modified Stout's patterns by inverting a stripe repeat and by using stripes to form tabs and loops that draped freely on the garment. Adrian's use of stripes was often suggestive of movement and referenced the dynamism of Contructivism. His designs incorporating Stout's textiles, however, introduced a more artisanal aspect of modernism to his collections.
