Using a favorite theme of menswear in a suitably feminine way, Beene has created an icon of American sportswear. Of course, Beene's sportswear is informed by his traditional training. The result is, like McCardell or other pioneers, that each gesture is knowingly made. Beene is in the position of reinventing sportswear for his generation.
