尾形香三夫作 練上壺 「眩暈」|Spiraling Vessel, Dizzy Shadings (Genun) — Ogata Kamio

Ogata, a native of Hokkaidō, is a self-taught potter who specializes in marbleized clay (neriage). This egg-shaped vessel with clay in hues of gray, teal, and buff appears to rotate like a small planet. As it was being thrown on a potter’s wheel its smooth surface was cut to create narrow, knife-edged ridges. The spiraling bands of color combine with narrowly spaced grooves to impart a sensation of vertigo, as indicated by its title.
