Tsujimura’s Oribe-type tea bowls are contemporary interpretations of the Momoyama-period (1573–1615) examples. This piece was thrown on the wheel, with the artist shaping the clay by hand to create an irregular form suited for the enjoyment of green matcha tea. Tsujimura had trained to be an oil painter but, inspired by a Korean-style Ido tea bowl, became attracted to pottery instead and started making ceramics while studying Zen Buddhism.
