This mahogany music cabinet, a product of the brief collaboration, from March 1903 to January 1904, between Gustav Stickley and the Prairie School architect Harvey Ellis, departs from the typical Stickley Craftsman furniture in its unusual form, bracket feet, subtle structural detailing, and in the use of marquetry in pendant panels that feature stylized grape clusters and leaves hanging from curling vines. An illustrated article in the January 1904 issue of "The Craftsman," a periodical promoting the Arts and Crafts movement and published by Stickley between 1901 and 1916, carefully explains that inlay was justified here because it emphasized the structural, and particularly the vertical, lines of the object.
