The wild goose on this badge corresponds to the fourth rank of civil officials. This square is a fine example of an exquisite tradition in rank badges that developed in the eighteenth century. The bird is shown in a delicately delineated landscape complete with trees, flowers, rocks, waves, and flowing water. Some painted detail is included—for example, the dots on the light-green grass in the foreground.
