Nishikawa Sukenobu

Nishikawa Sukenobu was one of Kyoto's most productive ukiyo-e artists. He studied under the painter Kano Einō (1631–1697), then Tosa Mitsusuke (1675–1710), and finally turned to ukiyo-e. His illustrated books were well received by elite readers and artists in Edo. The three-volume book Ehon Chitose-yama illustrates contemporary genre scenes with a short educational text and a poem over each double-page spread; the final volume is shown here.
