John Quincy Adams — Moritz Fürst

In 1807, at age twenty-six, the Vienna-trained die engraver Fürst moved to the United States. His major commissions included award medals for Army and Navy commanders in the War of 1812 and Indian Peace Medal portraits of all presidents from James Monroe (1758-1831) to Martin van Buren (1782-1862). This medal commemorates the March 4, 1825 inauguration of President John Quincy Adams (1767-1848). Fürst’s prolific output made him the most important engraver in American medallic art during the early nineteenth century.
