Huzhou was a center of bronze mirror production from the Song through the Qing dynasty. This eight-lobed mirror is a classic type from Huzhou that recalls the forms of contemporary ceramics, lacquers, and silver ware. The mark on the back reads: “Authentic mirror by the twenty-second uncle of the Shi family from Huzhou.” The word “authentic” is a testimony to the robust demand for these objects in a market in which imitations had already become common.
