The vivacity and boldness of the design on this box can be traced to the art of Ogata Kōrin, a painter, calligrapher, and potter who transformed Japanese art in the Edo period. The style he pioneered, which is known as Rinpa after the last syllable of his first name, is found in paintings, woodblock prints, lacquers, and ceramics dating well into the nineteenth century.
