Originally, this mantelpiece and an accompanying grate (64.36.1c) were installed in the Tweedy House in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. Dating from about 1853, the mantelpiece consists of a white marble fireplace surround, with scalloped edges, richly carved in a continuous pattern of shell, leaf, scroll, and floral motifs. In the center of the surround is a profile portrait of a young man. The surround is surmounted by a serpentine shelf with molded edges.
