This print shows the Japanese empress visiting injured soldiers in a military hospital in Tokyo during the First Sino-Japanese War. Kneeling on the bed at lower right is Onoguchi Tokuji, the combat engineer who was celebrated as a hero of the war for his role during the Japanese attack on Jinzhou Fortress, a scene illustrated in a large number of propagandistic prints.
