The traditional Japanese smoking ensemble—pipe, tobacco pouch, and netsuke—is the subject of this embossed commemorative print by Kubo Shunman, dated 1813. The poems inscribed in the top portion of the print link the fires of Kasuga Temple at Nara with the smoke emitted from the smoking set of a guard who fills his pipe and indulges in this practice.
