Commissioned by the Friends Club of Kamige, this design is the quintessential fish surimono. Here the carp, shown beneath the murky water, has been painstakingly rendered with numerous color blocks, creating a rich tonal quality for its scales. In the lower right-hand corner is a small stamp reading "Hayashi"; this is the personal seal of Hayashi Tadamasa, the great expert and dealer of Japanese art in Paris. No doubt this print was acquired by Mrs. Havemeyer from Mr. Hayashi, as were the "Spring Rain Albums."
