Katsushika Hokusai

A basket of flowers with long, pendant cords blown by the wind appears beneath a partially rolled-up bamboo blind, or misu. The long, horizontal format is particularly daring. Closer inspection reveals an embossed decoration on the white cords. Hokusai's signature reads Sōri aratame Hokusai Shin ga ("painted by Hokusai Shin, changed from Sōri"); two seals, in red and white characters, read Tokimasa. The artist used the name Tokimasa during his Sōri and early Hokusai periods.
