Ikat, a term that generally corresponds to kasuri in Japanese, is a resist-patterning technique that requires careful planning. Traditionally, threads of the warp or weft or both are tied in certain areas and then dyed before weaving. The tied areas resist the dye, remaining white, and the desired pattern emerges as the cloth is woven.
