This stencil is an excellent example of the textile designer's art, with its masterful play of light and dark, positive and negative. A floral pattern and an irregular diagonal background are also seen in the obi worn by the woman in the accompanying print. In his rendering of the obi, the print artist, in turn, may have been seeking to show the fluid rippling effect of light on a sheer fabric like a patterned gauze.
