Vase
Frederick Hurten Rhead|Rhead Pottery
1913–17 · Earthenware · The American Wing

Recalling the California countryside, this vase with a stylized landscape of cypress trees is one of only a handful of known examples made by Rhead at his short-lived pottery operation in Santa Barbara, California. It exemplifies the soft, organic compositions he employed during this period, which stand in contrast to the more structured, conventionalized designs typical of other Arts and Crafts potteries.
