One of the most remarkable watercolorists of the late nineteenth century, Garden possessed a technical virtuosity that allowed him to produce landscapes that encourage a meditative state in the viewer. This evocative winter scene, which the artist called "a recollection," was created using bands of wash, subtle gradations of tone, and precise linear brushwork. The cropped, screenlike arrangement of trees and silhouetted forms point to Garden’s interest in photography, while the colors and network of branches are precisely detailed and expressive. The artist gained little public recognition during his career and spent his life painting along the river Great Ouse in Bedfordshire, whose many tributaries are bordered by flood-prone marshlands.
