Resistance, dignity, and pride : African American artists in Los Angeles — Paul Von Blum|CAAS Publications

" ... introduces readers to the lives and works of sixteen African Americans prominent in the Los Angeles art world of the late 20th century. While the artists discussed here include many of the brightest stars of the African American art community, their selection was not intended to reflect any critical judgment in the sense of a top ten list. Serendipitously, the author became acquainted with each of these artists during the course of his work as a professor of African American Studies at UCLA. Therefore, it should be added that this book is not intended to provide a comprehensive critical appreciation of these artists in the context of the American art scene, though again it moves in that direction. While various works and artistic genres and styles are described and discussed, the author is unequivocally and unapologetically a fan of the artists reviewed here."--Introduction, p. ix
