Though honeysuckle, pansies, carnations and pimpernels in this repeat pattern are recognizable, the anonymous needleworker- probably a male professional- has gently stylized their shapes into a pleasing, decorative pattern. Beautifully executed, this embroidery is worked in colored silks and precious metal threads against a pale silk satin ground. It may originally have been intended as part of a cushion cover to furnish wooden benches, stools, even luxurious floor cushions within an affluent Stuart home; alternatively, with its silken ground and the miniature scale of its finely worked pattern, it could once have been part of a rich garment.
