Although he never publicly declared any political affiliation, Steinlen produced many works in support of socialist causes. In 1905, he made four lithographic portraits of Maxim Gorky, likely as part of a European campaign advocating for the release of the Russian writer and activist from prison. This is a cropped version of a full-length portrait, which Steinlen achieved by printing only the left side of the lithographic stone.
