Portrait of Madame Fournier
Antoine Auguste Ernest Hébert
1885 · White chalk, black pastel, and red chalk · Drawings and Prints

Little known today, Hébert was a distinguished nineteenth-century academic artist. This drawing is a testament to his activity as a popular painter of society portraits, although it is more personal in nature, dedicated by the artist to his friend, M. Fournier, presumably the husband of the sitter. It dates from 1885, the year Hébert was appointed for a second term as Director of the French Academy in Rome.
