Frank Howard|Robert Dodsley
1834 · Watercolor · Drawings and Prints

A sad woman sits by a lake, a small dog at her feet. One of a group of twelve book illustration designs reproduced as an engraving in an 1834 edition of Robert Dodsley's "The Economy of Human Life," published in London John van Voorst. The image illustrates the text: "See how she droopeth her head; like the flower whose root is cut assunder, see how she fixeth her eyes upon the earth--see how they serve her to no purpose but weeping."
