A lone man in a hut, tucked into a thick woods, looks up toward puffy white clouds that, as the title suggests, appear to be emerging from the central mountain peak, rendered with a concentration of dark black dots and dashes over lighter and dryer brushmarks. Fukuda Kodōjin, the Chinese characters of whose name mean literally “Old Daoist,” was highly regarded not only for his accomplishments in the fields of painting and calligraphy but also as a poet of Chinese verse. A poem, composed by the artist himself, is brushed at upper left.
