This vase’s design foreshadows the revolutionary interpretations of archaic bronzes in the thirteenth century. While the tubular handles and overall shape have roots in ancient bronze ritual wine containers, its elongated neck is inspired by Song ceramics. The four bladelike lappets also derive from ancient bronzes, but they exist as independent motifs that float free of the vessel shape. Covered in a brownish-black patina, the vase evokes the appeal of the remote past.
