Aligny made this strikingly spare drawing in 1834, during his second visit to Italy. It presents an expansive view over the quarries at Cervara in the countryside east of Rome. A decade later, back in Paris, he revisited the subject in the painting he submitted to the Salon of 1844 (now lost).
