An independent decorator based in Augsburg, Seuter’s work indicates the trend towards naturalistic motifs that would characterize later examples of eighteenth-century tin-glazed earthenware in Germany. Seuter in fact worked as a porcelain painter at Meissen, alongside his activities as a goldsmith, silk dyer and copper engraver. The floral designs and peacock found on this jug are characteristic motifs of the early eighteenth century, elaborate designs that enliven the quotidian form of the Enghalskrüge, a type of narrow-necked jug favored by Seuter.
