The print depicts the dramatic revenge of Nauplios after Rosso Fiorentino’s fresco on the north side of the Galerie François I in the Palace of Fontainbleau, south of Paris. Avenging the unjust killing of Palamedes, Nauplios caused the Greek fleet that was sailing home from the Trojan War to shipwreck. The fresco dates from 1535–37, and in the decades shortly after it was completed printmakers reproduced it in print; Antonio Fantuzzi for example produced an etching around 1542–47 (see 49.50.220). Fantuzzi’s print shows several differences when compared to the painting; for example, he includes rocks in the foreground. Garnier’s print however faithfully follows the original without embellishment.
