緑陰煎茗図 (Ryokuin senmei zu)|Brewing Tea in the Shade of Trees
Aoki Mokubei 青木木米
1820s · Hanging scroll; ink and color on paper · Asian Art

In this idyllic mountain landscape by the Kyoto-based potter and painter Aoki Mokubei, a group of literati gather to partake of sencha (steeped tea) according to Chinese fashion. A young servant tends to the ceramic stove, which heats a kettle of water. The painting evokes the Sinophile literati culture of Japan’s urban elite.
