This plate illustrates the principles and processes behind the viscosity method developed by Krishna in his work with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17. Marks of various depths and textures operate in tandem with inks of different weights, which are applied with both hard and soft rollers, to enable simultaneous color printing. Krishna regarded printmaking as a philosophical and spiritual quest; each stage has significance as the image takes different forms before the artist commits it to paper in the final proof. Like Hayter, Krishna viewed the metal plate as not merely a component of printmaking but a work of art in itself, its sculptural qualities reflecting his training in three-dimensional art with Henry Moore and Ossip Zadkine.
