1294 · Cast bronze · Asian Art

The inscription under its lip states that the cup was cast in 1294 for the Confucian school of Wu County (now Suzhou, Jiangsu Province). It was part of a larger project that was completed between 1293 and 1295 and supervised by two scholar-officials, Li Gan and Fang Wenbao. The Cernuschi cup nearby was from the same group but cast one year earlier. The Wu County vessels are the earliest ritual bronzes that bear dated inscriptions from the Yuan dynasty. Inscription 至元甲午歲李淦方文豹鑄吳學祭器 In the jiawu year of the Zhiyuan reign, Li Gan and Fang Wenbao cast this ritual vessel for the Confucian school of Wu Prefecture.
