Martinet was a leading engraver of ornithological prints who worked in France during the latter half of the 18th century. He trained as an engineer and draftsman and engraving book illustrations was initially a secondary profession. As his popularity and output grew, printmaking consumed most of his time and he became known for the prints used to illustrate “Histoire Naturelle Des Oiseaux” (1765-80), a multi-volumed set of books that contains over 1000 hand-colored plates. This image of a parrot comes from a different series.
