This handsome pair of Baroque porphyry urn with gadrooned lids were probably made in Rome and indeed bear resemblance with a design by the Roman painter and engraver Giovanni Angelo Canini (1609–1666), preserved at the Louvre. The echo of gadrooned lid and lower section of an urn, paired with ram’s horn handles can be found on numerous mid-17th century porphyry vases, including several examples from Cardinal Mazarin’s collection now at the Louvre.
